The concept of choice is at the heart of some very heated debates today, but setting aside the current political climate, ultimate choice is about a different matter altogether. In fact, the central question that determines our eternal destiny is all about our choice -> “Who will we choose, God or the devil?” It is the same question God presented to the Israelites in the Old Testament:
"Today I have given you the choice between life and death, between blessings and curses. Now I call on heaven and earth to witness the choice you make. Oh, that you would choose life, so that you and your descendants might live! (Deuteronomy 30:19 NLT)
Any choices we make today are secondary to- and stem from- this all important choice. If we aren’t choosing to follow God and His ways, which lead to life, we are choosing death and destruction, in the short term as well as the long term… The very long term, in fact, as in, eternity. But the good news is that as long as we’re on this earth, we always have a choice.
You have the choice to either follow yourself or follow Jesus… The number one power we have is the ability to choose. (excerpt from Learning to Love in the Hard Places pt.2, by Dr. Chester C. Pipkin Jr.)
Even though we don’t have the power to dictate all of our circumstances or even decide the choices set before us, we can determine our own responses: Will we follow God no matter what, and trust that He has the best outcome for us? Or will we reject the God of all creation for what others say is best for us or for what we think will make us happy? These are the kinds of decisions we have to make not just once, but every day. Let’s follow the advice that God Himself has given us and choose life!
