An Eternal Investment

Following Jesus is an investment of your spiritual obedience to the Lord. You follow what the Lord wants you to say and do. (excerpt from Getting Understanding pt. 1 by Dr. Chester C. Pipkin)

When you hear the term, “investment,” what do you think of?  Maybe real estate or stocks?  Precious metals or digital currency or even education?  Well, as useful as these things may be, we can’t take their benefits with us when we leave this life.  Thankfully, God offers an investment strategy that persists into eternity, and we would be wise to heed His recommendations.  Jesus said,

Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. (Matthew 6:19-21 NKJV)

So how do we do that? By investing our lives in obediently following Christ.

Then Jesus said to His disciples, "If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it. For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?” (Matthew 16:24-26 NKJV)

Following Christ is the answer to gaining eternal profit: not mere riches in this life, but that treasure in heaven and our very souls.  Now that’s a return on investment that’s worth the price!
