Anchor in the Storm of Popular Opinion

How can we know what’s true and what’s right when everything around us seems to be so subjective?  People use phrases like “my truth” to emphasize the potential for all of us to see the same facts and circumstances differently.  In fact, for some, the assertion that there is such a thing as right and wrong or an absolute, objective truth, is an outdated and offensive position that must be shouted down.  So what can we do to be sure that we aren’t the ones getting deceived and off-track?  It starts with staying anchored to the One unwavering source of 100% reliable truth: God.  Left to our own devices, it is guaranteed that we will go astray.

We will inevitably be persuaded against uncomfortable truths by our own reasoning, desires, fears, and past experiences. Add to these influences the input from all the voices around us, many of them very compelling, and is it any surprise that people are adopting more palatable positions on all manner of issues?

If you don’t know the Lord, you’ll come up with different conclusions about a lot of things. (excerpt from Learning to Love in the Hard Places, by Dr. Chester C. Pipkin Jr.)

On the other hand, knowing the Lord, His Word and His ways will always help us to avoid deception and stay on the right track.  God has a point of view of His own, and His is the only one that ultimately matters, and therefore the only one we should pursue.  We can’t follow our own feelings or rationale because,

"The human heart is the most deceitful of all things, and desperately wicked. Who really knows how bad it is?” (Jeremiah 17:9 NLT)

In stark contrast to today’s cultural maxim of, “Follow your heart,” the Bible counsels us to do just the opposite and instead, trust God, put our hope in Him, and allow His Word to be final authority regarding any issue or question.

How can a young person stay pure? By obeying your word. (Psalm 119:9 NLT)
