Taming the Tongue

The things we say to and about people are so important, and it can be very easy to lose sight of their significance. A few words can wreak havoc on someone's self-esteem or send them on a path of destruction, whether it’s name-calling, put-downs, or being mean and hurtful in any way- and that includes online as well as in-person.  The Bible’s perspective on this is one of love because everyone is precious to God, no matter what they have done or even how they feel about God Himself.

We have all been made in the similitude of God Himself. Therefore, we should always be speaking with the right spirit towards people. (excerpt from Getting Understanding pt. 1 by Dr. Chester C. Pipkin)

God is clear in the Scriptures that His followers’ speech towards everyone should be full of grace and love, to build up and not tear down.  Circumstances don’t change the fundamental truth that God’s love goes out to every person, and contradicting it in the way we speak is not consistent with God’s heart at all.

…The tongue is a small thing that makes grand speeches. But a tiny spark can set a great forest on fire. ... Sometimes it praises our Lord and Father, and sometimes it curses those who have been made in the image of God. And so blessing and cursing come pouring out of the same mouth. Surely, my brothers and sisters, this is not right! (James 3:5, 9-10 NLT)

Every conversation isn’t a deep exchange, but whatever the context or subject matter, our words should be “seasoned with salt.”  That is, we should be mindful of what we say so that it brings life to everyone who hears us. (Col. 4:6.)
